80 yılda (1942,1946 kupaları savaş nedeniyle yapılamadı) tam 19 dünya kupası yapıldı.19 şampiyonada 8 ayrı şampiyon çıktı.ilk yıllarda davet usulü ile katılım yapılırken daha sonra ki yıllarda eleme usulüne dönülmüştür.1930 Uruguay'daki kupaya 13 takım katılmıştır.1998 Fransa Dünya Kupasından itibarense katılımcı sayısı 32'ye çıkarılmıştır.
